Information

The Shard, solo exhibition, Santikos Gallery, Southwest School of Art, San Antonio, TX

Jessica Mallios presents new photographic works derived from her recent visit to “The Shard,” the iconic glass-clad London skyscraper. Using structural elements of the building’s observation platform and the panoptical orientation that it creates, Mallios takes the fragmented glass and architectural details of the tallest building in Western Europe as her source material. Through the manipulation of photographic and industrial materials, this series explores her ongoing interests in optics, panoptical architecture, camera vision, and human perception. Also on view is Berliner Fernsehturm, 2017. The 55-minute video, filmed at the Berlin Television Tower, is edited to match the duration of a single tower rotation. The decals of Berlin landmarks on the windows of the observation tower, like that of “The Shard,” serve as material for Mallios to connect detached and disorienting views from the apparatus of the camera to its origins in architecture.
